As we age, we may lose some sharpness in the complex functions of memory and cognition. Phosphatidylserine (PS) is vital to brain cell structure and function, and plays an important role in the brain's neurotransmitter systems, metabolism, and maintaining nerve connections.
This natural hormone supports communication between brain cells and promotes improved memory function. Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid concentrated in the brain that maintains memory, learning, concentration, word recall, and mood. PS supports the integrity of cell structures in the brain as well as removing toxins and importing nutrients to the cell. It is used to make a compound called acetylcholine, which the brain uses to manufacture neurotransmitters for communication between cells.
PS circulates throughout the central nervous system and builds a healthy infrastructure of communication to promote improved memory and cognitive function. PS is also found in other cell membranes, such as muscle tissue and cells of the immune system, where it may play both a structural and functional role in muscle metabolism and immune system function. For your safety, ProHealth's Phosphatidyl Serine formula is derived from soy, rather than bovine brain tissue.
One large study in Italy(1) followed 494 elderly participants over a 6 month period. The subjects were administered either 300 mg of PS or placebo daily, and the group that took PS performed significantly better in both behavior and mental function than the placebo group.
