What is Epigenetics?

Epi - is a greek prefix for ‘above’.

Genetics is the study of our DNA. Together, Epigenetics means the study of things above and beyond the genome! This means we are studying the changes to your DNA and how it actually affects the body instead of what the DNA could possibly do or mean.

It is often more useful than genetics because it allows us to see how the genetic material in your body behaves instead of just seeing what it contains! Traditional genetics is like looking at a light bulb and its components but not knowing if the bulb is producing light. Epigenetics lets us know if the life bulb is on or off.

How TruDiagnostic's TruAge™ Works

Once you have received your blood collection kit, you will need to register the collection tube's barcode.

This is how TruDiagnostic will identify that the blood sample in that collection tube belongs to you. Unregistered kits that have been received at the lab will not begin processing until the kit is registered to an account. Be sure to provide your sample following the detailed instructions included in your blood collection kit, then mail your kit back to TruDiagnostic in the prepaid packaging you received with your order. After their laboratory receives your sample, your results will be available in your online account in approximately 2-4 weeks, but please keep in mind that processing times may vary. You can track your sample's progress on your profile homepage.

What happens to my DNA sample at the lab?

For such a powerful product, the TruDiagnostic™ Personal Epigenetic Test process is fairly simple: order, provide your blood sample and see your data. But between you putting your sample in the mail and alerting you that your data is ready, there's actually quite a bit that goes on at the laboratory. The Visual Exam

Samples arrive at the lab every day. The first thing technicians do with each new sample is to scan the barcode on it, because, for privacy reasons, that's the only identifying information the laboratory has.

As soon as a sample has been scanned, it undergoes its first test - a visual inspection to make sure it contains fluid up to the "fill line" on the side of the tube. Occasionally a sample will not pass this step, usually because it leaked in transit. If a sample tube doesn't contain enough liquid TruDiagnostic immediately contact the customer and ship a replacement kit so he or she can provide a blood sample again.

DNA Extraction

If a sample passes the visual inspection, it is time for DNA extraction. The process our laboratory uses to isolate and purify the DNA in your blood is simply an automated version of the same one you can do at home. Once the DNA is extracted from the sample, the concentration is measured to make sure there is enough for the actual analysis process on the chip.

If the first attempt at DNA extraction does not yield satisfactory results, a second attempt is made with some blood that was set aside before the process was started. If this second try fails, TruDiagnostic will contact the customer and send a free replacement kit so he or she can provide a blood sample again. The hope is that this second sample will be DNA-rich and ready to go!

The most common cause of low DNA is that the preservative solution is not fully released into the tube. If a customer is sent a replacement kit, and two tries on the new blood sample still do not yield enough DNA, then, unfortunately, the customer probably won't be able to use our service and a refund for the kit fee minus shipping and handling is provided. Luckily, this is a very rare occurrence.

Evaluating your Biological Age

Samples that yield sufficient quantities of DNA are processed using our custom genome-wide analysis chip. This process is performed in batches of 96 samples. TruDiagnostic monitors the process to make sure it is going as expected. If a particular sample fails to give information for at least 98.5% of the markers we test for, TruDiagnostic will go back to the blood sample that was set aside in the extraction step and try again. If a second attempt at measuring methylation fails, TruDiagnostic will ship a free replacement kit to the customer so he or she can send their sample again.

Data Return

Once a sample has been successfully analyzed, the laboratory sends the resulting data to TruDiagnostic™ along with the barcode that came with the sample. This allows TruDiagnostic to return the information to the proper account and begin interpreting your data.

Shortly after, you will receive an email notification letting you know to log in to your profile and view your biological age report.


Using the Kit

What items are included in the TruAge™ kit?

Each blood collection kit contains:

  • A gauze pad, alcohol wipe, and bandage
  • A blood collection tube, two lancets
  • A small, clear plastic bio-hazard bag
  • Step-by-step instructions for providing your sample
  • Paid return shipping envelope – USPS
  • Barcode - located both on the biohazard bag and the tube insert

What do I do when I receive my TruAge™ kit?

1. Register your Kit

Registering your kit links your sample with your profile, and allows your results to be provided securely online. Register your kit here. Upon registration, you'll required to enter you barcode in twice. Your barcode can be found on the provided biohazard bag and on the tube insert.

2. Provide your Blood Sample
Once your kit is registered, review the directions included in your kit before providing your sample. Following sample collection instructions will help ensure the quality and viability of your DNA. You can access a blood collection video tutorial by clicking here.

The blood collection kit tube includes EDTA to prevent coagulation of your blood and stable at room temperature for 3 -5 days, but we recommend you ship your collected sample to the laboratory at your earliest convenience.

Invert the collection tube a few times to ensure a mixture of EDTA and blood sample. Once your DNA is extracted, your sample is stable at a wide range of temperatures (4 ºC to – 196 ºC).

3. Mail your Kit
Return shipping is prepaid at the time that a kit is purchased. Once you have registered your kit and provided your sample, drop the package off at any US Postal Service mailbox or postal office.

4. Keep Track of your Sample
Once your sample is in the mail, you can track its status from your TruDiagnostic™ account. You will also receive email notifications for key sample status updates, including when a kit is received at the lab and when your results are available in your online account.

How much blood is required and who is this collection method designed for?

Our service requires about 3-5 drops of blood. Most people are able to obtain this small amount of blood needed to produce a viable sample.

Our sample collection method is not designed for:

Individuals who are unable to draw blood; these individuals may not be able to provide a sample using our collection kit.

Individuals who are undergoing a medical treatment that reduces their red blood cell count; these individuals are advised to wait at least two weeks after the last treatment or until the red blood cell count has returned to normal.

Individuals who have received a bone marrow transplant; in the event that the analysis was successful, it still would be unclear whether the results were based on DNA from the person providing the sample or the donor.

If you have purchased the TruDiagnostic Personal Epigenetic Service for someone who is unable to provide a sample, you can give the unregistered collection tube to someone else, or you can request a refund per our refund policy. It is during the registration process that a collection tube is connected with a specific person. If the collection tube has been registered, please contact us from the registered email address and we will outline the available options.

Time and temperature guidelines for DNA sampling

The blood collection kit includes an anticoagulant that is added to your blood immediately after you finish providing your sample. The DNA extracted from your sample is stable at a wide range of temperatures (4 ºC to – 196 ºC). Unused kits also remain stable even if exposed to temperatures in this range during transit or storage.
